Meet Micah

When Micah first came to The Care Service, she and her two children were sharing a bedroom in a friend’s basement. Despite working over 50 hours a week at a convenience store, Micah couldn’t find a place she could afford for her family.

Case Manager Brittany enrolled Micah in The Care Service’s Food Pantry to stretch her grocery budget while searching for affordable housing. Brittany also connected her to a free budgeting class. “It taught me about bank accounts, credit cards, loans, all that which I had no idea about,” said Micah. She opened her first savings account upon completing the course.

While working with The Care Service, Micah was approved for a housing voucher for rental assistance. When Micah found a place, The Care Service helped the young family get a fresh start. Brittany helped Micah get the kids’ clothes for school and furniture from local organizations, including a dining room table that quickly became the heart of their new home.

Sometimes it’s the simple things that mean the most. After four years making do with whatever they could prepare in the basement, it was magical for Micah to sit down to a real dinner at a real dining table with her children. With groceries from The Care Service’s Food Pantry, Micah is now able to cook nutritious meals for the kids, and the kids love joining her in the kitchen. Micah’s daughter, Maci, loves drawing at their new dining room table, and the family often ends their evenings playing board games at the table.

Micah was recently promoted to assistant manager and continues to grow her savings. The children are now thriving in their new space and are more confident at school. “The Care Service has been a huge blessing for our family,” said Micah. “I don’t know where I would be right now without them, and I’m so grateful that I had that helping hand because we have a home now.”
