Meet David

All Stories

Last winter, David’s landlord decided not to renew his lease after the 77-year-old lost his part-time job. On a cold, snowy weekend, David became homeless. With his Social Security check still weeks away, David had no place to go. “I was terrified. I’ve never had this happen to me before.” Said David.

Fortunately, a local St. Vincent De Paul conference was able to temporarily place David in a hotel room for a few nights. The Care Service then stepped in to provide David with an extension of his hotel stay until his Social Security check arrived. In the meantime, Care Service Case Manager Alyson worked with David to find a new apartment within his price range, while Street Outreach worker Amy brought food from Care Service food pantry to David. “They kept my spirits up.” Shared David.

As a result of this coordinated effort, 77‑year‑old David remained safe indoors throughout the coldest nights of last winter.

Once David moved into his new apartment, Alyson connected him with clothing and furniture resources to make his new place feel like home. David is now enrolled in The Care Service’s mobile food pantry. With stability restored, David found a new job at Dollar General to supplement his Social Security income.

Recently, when his apartment had a water leak, David laughed it off: “To me, this is a happy problem.” David is grateful for all the help he received along the way and is looking forward to a peaceful Christmas. The support system built by The Care Service and other agencies made sure that David—and so many more—can have a safe and warm place to call home.
