Theresa prayed every night and day for a place of her own. When the 75-year-old grandmother was kicked out of her daughter’s home after a family dispute, she came to The Care Service for help. “This is the first time I’ve ever had to ask for help,” said Theresa. “I’ve always made it on my own.”
Theresa met with Jane, a Care Service social worker, who took time to learn more about her situation. Jane learned that Theresa was retired after working in the field of geriatrics. In 2021 she spent six weeks in the hospital due to COVID. Due to the long-term effects she relies on an inhaler and is unable to work. Jane realized that Theresa would have a difficult time finding an apartment on her limited income from social security and a small pension. To address an immediate concern, Jane invited Theresa to join The Care Service Food Pantry Program since she was struggling to afford food and day-to-day expenses. Then Jane helped Theresa apply for low-income housing for seniors and advocated to landlords on her behalf. When she was accepted but could not afford the deposit, The Care Service helped by paying the deposit as well as rent for the first two months so she could move in and get settled.
The new apartment is perfect for Theresa. She loves having space to cook and a cozy area to crochet.
Having a home didn’t solve all of Theresa’s problems. She continued to struggle with the family issues that had resulted in alienation from her daughter. To help, Jane provided her with counseling referrals. And, to make sure that she is able to stay in her new home, Jane helped Theresa develop an affordable budget. Theresa now pays her own bills.
When talking with Theresa today the difference in her is obvious. Her fearfulness and worry have been replaced with a sense of peace.
